Bellingham eateries update: One closure, one new venture in January

Looking for a new restaurant to try out? Whatcom County saw one new eatery open in January, as another closed permanently.

Millet Bakery

A new gluten-free bakery, Millet Bakery, opened Saturday, Jan. 3. The bakery, started by a team of three sisters, specializes in gluten-free muffins, scones, bagels, pretzels, cinnamon rolls, breads, cheesecake, Danish pastries and more. The bakery is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday — with plans to expand hours soon — at 2500 Cornwall Ave. in downtown Bellingham, the previous location of Avellino Gluten Free Bakery.

Closed Whatcom County restaurant

Crooked Spoon

One of Fairhaven’s most prominent eateries closed permanently Sunday, Jan. 25, vacating a prime corner spot in the historic neighborhood. Crooked Spoon, previously known as Acme Valley Ice Cream, closed its only brick-and-mortar location at 1021 Harris Ave. The popular ice cream company will continue selling ice cream in grocery stores across the country.
