Parent shot dead in school parking lot after fight at basketball game, Illinois cops say
A parent was shot and killed in a high school parking lot after a dispute during a youth basketball tournament, Illinois officials say and news outlets report.
The “tragic incident” happened outside of Hillcrest High School, in Country Club Hills, on Saturday, Nov. 9, Bremen High School District 228 officials said in a statement.
“During a junior high boys’ basketball tournament held that afternoon, a parent attending the game from a neighboring community became a victim of gun violence,” the district said.
There was some sort of disagreement or fight between parents during the tournament, and it ended in violence, officials said, WLS reported.
A witness told the station that the tournament had just ended, at about 1:30 p.m., when the parent was fatally shot in the parking lot.
It’s not clear what the dispute was about, but Country Club Hills police say the parent and their child were leaving when a darkly-tinted Infiniti with multiple armed suspects inside pulled in front of the parent and opened fire, killing him, WBBM reported.
The man was taken to a hospital where he died, the station reported. The suspects left the scene.
No arrests have been announced as of Sunday, Nov. 10.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, loved ones, and all those affected by this heartbreaking event,” the school district said. “The incident is currently under investigation, and we are fully cooperating with law enforcement.”
Country Club Hills is a suburb of Chicago and a roughly 26-mile drive south from the city’s downtown.
