Authorities identify Ferndale man as bicyclist who was struck, killed by train

A bicyclist who died in Ferndale after being struck by a train has been identified as Rodney Redfern, 54, of Ferndale, according to Deb Hollis with the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Redfern died after he rode into a railroad crossing bar while traveling south on Horvander Road around 2 p.m. Aug. 17 and was “thrown into the path of the moving train,” according to a city of Ferndale news release.

His cause of death has been listed as multiple blunt force injuries, and his death has been ruled accidental by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
