Technology firm announces departure from Bellingham, intent to lay off 75 workers
Alpha Technologies Services, Inc., one of Bellingham’s largest manufacturers, plans to lay off 75 employees beginning Aug. 31.
The company, which has provided commercial energy equipment for various industries since its formation in 1976, is closing its entire operations unit on Oct. 15. The closure is expected to be permanent.
Lisa Hartman, vice president of investor relations and corporate communications at EnerSys, the company that owns Alpha Technologies Services, Inc., told The Bellingham Herald that the closure is “part of a broader effort to optimize our global manufacturing footprint and position the business for long-term success.”
“This decision was made only after careful consideration and reflects our ongoing efforts to optimize our manufacturing footprint and leverage increased capacity created through continuous improvement initiatives, while continuing to meet customer demand and commitments,” Hartman said in an email.
Hartman said all manufacturing and assembly operations will be transferred to an existing facility in Suwanee, Ga.
Affected employees include assemblers, machine operators, engineers and technicians. All have already been notified, and none are represented by a union.
Employees who don’t work in the operations unit will be moved to another physical or remote-work setting, the company said, and some operations unit employees may receive an offer to transfer to an affiliated company location in Georgia or an alternate Washington location. The company’s website lists only its Bellingham location among Washington state properties.
Alpha Technologies Services, Inc. notified the Washington State Employee Security Department of the closure on Monday. The company is required to notify the department under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which necessitates that companies planning a mass layoff give workers 60 days notice.
