How much apartment space can you get for $1,500 in Bellingham?

Real estate website RentCafe recently ranked the 200 largest cities in the United States where renters can get the most apartment space for $1,500 a month in 2025.

On average, U.S. renters can get about 715 square feet of space for $1,500 per month, RentCafe found.

However, how much apartment you can get from your money varies from city to city — ranging from 228 square feet in Manhattan, New York, to 1,329 square feet in Wichita, Kansas.

The median monthly rent in the United States is $1,406 a month, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

While Bellingham wasn’t included in the published study, RentCafe shared local data with The Bellingham Herald.

How much space can you rent for $1,500 in Bellingham?

On average, Bellingham residents who spend $1,500 a month on rent can get a 617-square-foot apartment, RentCafe told The Herald.

That’s larger than a typical studio apartment, which spans 457 square feet on average, but smaller than the average one-bedroom apartment, which features 735 feet of space, according to a separate RentCafe study.

It’s worth noting that 617 square feet of space is significantly less than the national average.

In 62% of the cities featured in the RentCafe study, the typical $1,500-a-month apartment is larger than the national average, suggesting Bellingham is on the more expensive side.

What are rent values in Seattle? Spokane?

RentCafe’s study looked at apartments available for rent for $1,500 a month in five Washington cities: Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, Bellevue and Vancouver.

Here’s how much space you can get for a monthly rent of $1,500 in those cities:

  • Spokane: 962 square feet
  • Vancouver: 818 square feet
  • Tacoma: 727 square feet
  • Bellevue: 486 square feet
  • Seattle: 456 square feet

How does rent in Bellingham compare to other US cities?

In terms of apartment space available for $1,500 in monthly rent, Bellingham ranks among the more expensive small cities in the nation, according to RentCafe.

In this context, small cities are those with fewer than 225,000 residents.

The average size of a $1,500 rental ranged from 406 square feet in Sunnyvale, California, to 1,432 square feet in Columbus, Georgia, RentCafe said.

In comparison, $1,500 a month gets you 619 square feet in Philadelphia.

How did RentCafe come up with its findings?

To determine how much apartment space $1,500 buys in the United States in 2025, RentCafe said it analyzed data sourced from various government or trusted third-party databases, including the U.S. Census Bureau.
