A second person has died of injuries suffered in an apartment fire last week in Ferndale, and the names of both victims have been released.
Kristine Gregory, 53, died in the Dec. 5 fire, the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office told The Bellingham Herald in a phone call. Gregory died of smoke inhalation, and her death is being ruled accidental.
Firefighters rescued a second woman from the fire and took her by ambulance to St. Joseph Medical Center, but she later died, city of Ferndale spokeswoman Megan Juenemann told The Herald in an email.
Sierra Johnson, 26, died of smoke inhalation and burns in Seattle, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office said online. Her death was ruled accidental.
Both deaths are blamed on the fire at 2145 Eastview Place in Ferndale.
Cause and origin of the fire were unknown because the investigation is continuing, Juenemann said.
The fire was reported about 7 a.m. Dec. 5 and was contained to a second-floor apartment, according to a previous statement.
