A handful of Bellingham businesses are proudly joining a call for a nationwide shutdown in protest of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics on Friday, Jan. 30.
One participating business, The Cabin Tavern, has covered its windows with homemade flyers to spread awareness for why its doors will be closed this Friday.
“NATIONWIDE SHUTDOWN! FRIDAY, JAN 30 2026 NO WORK NO SCHOOL NO SHOPPING ICE OUT EVERYWHERE!!! THE CABIN WILL BE CLOSED JOIN US” the posters state.

Village Books and Paper Dreams in Fairhaven will remain open. The business issued a statement of solidarity with the shutdown. “As a mission-based organization, our mission of ‘Building Community’ means we are committed to keeping our doors open to provide opportunities for connection and education.... The Readings Gallery is open to anyone who needs a space for conversation and connection. ...The League of Women Voters are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to register voters and to engage people in learning about civics and democracy. ... Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center volunteers are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to provide opportunities for conversation. ... Twenty percent of (Friday’s) sales will be donated to IRIS, a locally-based immigration support nonprofit.”
“It’s time to speak up in the best way to make our government listen: the money in their pockets,” staff at Worn Again Thrift wrote in a Jan. 29 Instagram post.
The thrift store will also be hosting a “Rage Fest” in the evening, donating all proceeds to the Whatcom County Immigrant Relief Fund and the Immigrant Resources and Immediate Support.
“We will not be selling clothes at the event. It will only be local artists vending and the Rage magazine available for purchase,” Worn Again Thrift’s Instagram post states.
Other local businesses are also speaking up on their decision to close for the day.
“Third Planet will be closed January 30th in solidarity with the nationwide general strike. ICE OUT! Enough is enough. No work. No school. No shopping. NO BUSINESS AS USUAL,” a Jan. 29 Instagram post by Third Planet states.
“Hope you join us in supporting and protecting the beautiful community we have here in Bellingham, and all communities across the nation,” Little Cheerful Cafe’s announcement states on Facebook.
