Whatcom Roundup: Downtown shop moves; local restaurant opens new location; spooky events

Here’s your weekly roundup of the latest retail, business and restaurant activity in and around Whatcom County:

Wine bar and coffee shop opens second location

Locus, a wine bar, coffee shop and restaurant in downtown Bellingham, has now opened a second location in the city. The restaurant serves a variety of espresso drinks, wine, beer, breakfast, lunch and even an ice cream sundae with animal crackers.

Locus Coffee has opened a second location in Barkley Village at 1985 Barkley Blvd., across the street from Regal Barkley Village movie theater. The new restaurant is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the same hours of its flagship location at 120 W Holly St.

Halloween brewery parties, haunted houses and more

Downtown Bellingham store moving

Backcountry Essentials, a outdoor sports store in downtown Bellingham, is now moving after opening in 2006. The store is currently at 214 W Holly St., next to Bayou on Bay restaurant, and plans are for a move “later this month,” according to a news release from the business.

The new location will be at at 1417 N. State St., between 20th Century Bowling and Vital Climbing Gym.

“While it is bittersweet to leave a building with such cherished memories, this next chapter will bring us more space to do what we love to do better; offer top-notch ski and bootfitting services, outfit folks with high-quality new and used gear, and host community events,” the news release states.

For the latest updates, the news release encourages customers to follow Backcountry Essential’s Instagram page.

The shop is regularly open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 am. to 5 p.m. Sunday, but hours may vary.

The Portal closing for the season

The Portal Container Village, one of Bellingham’s most popular and busy summer hangout spots, is closing for the winter season.

All of The Portal’s tenants, including Kulshan Brewing Co., Our Kitchen, Zeek’s Pizza, Selkie Scoop and the other shipping container businesses will be closing on Sunday, Nov. 3.

No opening date for The Portal’s 2025 season has been announced.
