Hoping to get your Whatcom driveway or neighborhood cleared of snow? It can be tough

A long stretch of snow and ice is an infrequent event in the lowlands of Whatcom County, but when it does happen it can make things tricky for those with steep driveways or are living on lesser-used roads.

With signs pointing toward below freezing temperatures in the coming days, any moisture can make getting to the main roads difficult. Unless you have a plow you can strap on to the front of your car or truck, your neighborhood road may remain difficult to navigate until temperatures rise above freezing.

A few local landscape and building management companies have snow removal services, but generally for existing clients. Chris Grainer of Preservative Services in Bellingham said his company can do snow removal without prior arrangements, but it’s generally a first-come, first-serve basis after all of the contracted customers are serviced. The company does offer a service list, which they are adding to now.

Grainer’s company usually tries to apply deicer before to a snow storm, which keeps snow from sticking to the surface.

“Otherwise snow turns into car-packed ice and the plow is not always able to scrape it off,” Grainer said in an email.

Grainer said he is already getting calls for the expected upcoming blast of freezing weather. Employees worked around the clock when temperatures stayed below freezing for much of February last year.

The city and county snow removal crews will work on clearing main routes. In Bellingham, crews will focus on six snow routes that are highly traveled and essential for police, fire, the Whatcom Transportation Authority and Bellingham schools.

In Bellingham, it is the responsibility of property owners to clear abutting sidewalks.
