Finding the right dessert for holiday feast is easy as pie at these Whatcom shops
With many of us already dreaming about Thanksgiving feasts, that can mean just one thing — pie!
Bellingham and the surrounding areas have delicious, one-of-a-kind, handmade pies that will strike up a conversation at the dinner table and even impress your mother-in-law.
Barb’s Pies and Pastries
Located at 5679 Third Ave. in Ferndale, Barb’s Pies and Pastries is known for their delectable, handmade pies, made with fresh ingredients, such as local butter for pie crust and pie fillings made with local fruits and berries.
“[The pies are] made with love,” owner Barb O’Brine told The Herald in an interview.
They offer a 9-inch deep dish pie with flavors ranging from pumpkin, caramel apple and pecan to an assortment of cream pies. Depending on the flavor, the prices are either $19 or $20 per pie.
Place your food orders by Saturday, Nov. 23, so they can be sure to have your pie ready by Thanksgiving. There are two ways to place your orders: by phone at 360-393-3780 or on their website.
Pie pick up is Nov. 26 and 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., but if another pick up day is desired that can be requested too.
Bellewood Farms
Bellewood Farms, which you can find at 6140 Guide Meridian in Lynden, is offering a few different ways you can achieve your pie goals this Thanksgiving. All of which use a famous pie dough recipe from Dory Belisle’s — Bellewood Farms’ original owner — apples grown in their orchard and Barbie’s Berries.
The 9-inch, deep dish pies serve seven to eight slices with plenty of flavors to choose from: traditional apple pie with pie dough on top, Dutch apple with streusel topping, pumpkin, berry and mousse.
You can pick up your pie baked ($20) or frozen ($19). If you are unable to make it out to Bellewood Farms, their pies are also available at Haggen.
If you want to make your own filling, you can purchase four pieces of frozen pie dough for $9.99 at their storefront.
The last day to place a pie order for Thanksgiving is Monday, Nov. 25. Call 360-318-7720 or stop in the shop to place your order. You can also request a specific day to pick up your baked pies, otherwise they will be ready on Nov. 27 before 3 p.m.
Dutch Mothers Family Restaurant and Catering
If your friends and family are in town before Thanksgiving and you want to go out for a slice of pie, this is the place to go, as they serve pies from Barb’s Pies and Pastries by the slice.
While Dutch Mothers, located at 405 Front Street in Lynden, used to bake it’s own pies, they’ve been serving Barb’s pies since 2018.
Stop by this holiday season as new owners will be making some changes to Dutch Mothers on January 1, 2020.
It’s a busy time of year, and maybe you had intentions of making your own pie or you just couldn’t find your perfect pie pan, don’t worry because you can stop in at Barb’s or Bellewood this holiday season.
Pro tip: if you are out and about getting pies, stop by Edaleen Dairy to pick up ice cream and whipped cream toppings for your pies.
