One of Whatcom County’s most successful teams will have a new coach this fall

Longtime Whatcom FC Rangers coach Paula French has been named the new girls soccer coach at Meridian High School, according to an email from Trojans athletic director Bryant Michaelson.

French played for Western Washington University from 1981 to ’84 and was inducted into the WWU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005, after she helped the Vikings to a 49-5-5 record, a 38-game win streak, two district titles, one league championship and a second-place finish at the 1984 NAIS Region I playoffs.

“Meridian is excited about the experience, energy and passion Paula brings to the table,” Michaelson wrote in the email.

French will replace Terri Tigert, who coached the Trojans for the past three years and led them to a 36-20-4 record and two state tournament appearances. Meridian finished tied for third in the Northwest Conference last fall and advanced to the Class 1A state quarterfinals before losing to Overlake and finishing with a 16-5-1 record.
