Mal Walton baseball tournament moves to Burlington in 2017

The 37th Annual Mal Walton Junior Varsity Baseball Tournament has been moved to Burlington-Edison High School Friday and Saturday to accommodate the memorial for legendary football coach Curt Kramme at Lynden High School, according to an email from tournament organizer Monte Walton.

The tournament will feature junior varsity teams from Ferndale, Lynden, Meridian, Squalicum, Sehome, Lynden Christian, Sedro-Woolley and Burlington-Edison. Skagit County teams have won four of the past five tournament titles, with Lynden’s championship in 2015 the lone exception.

Games begin at 2 p.m. Friday and conclude with the 2:45 p.m. championship game on Saturday.

Kramme, who coached the Lynden football team for 26 seasons and led the Lions to seven state titles and 18 state playoff appearances, died May 22 after a yearlong battle with cancer. The memorial for the Hall of Fame coach will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Jake Maberry Gymnasium on the Lynden High campus.
