Ferndale’s Dane Larsen shot an 80 to advance to the second day of the the Class 3A State Championships on Tuesday, May 24, at Creek of Qualchan Golf Course in Spokane.
Larsen was just good enough to stay below the cutline of 80, but his teammate Keenan Souve shot an 81 and missed the cut. Larsen said he thought he managed the course pretty well.
“I just tried to stay within myself,” Larsen said. “I think I should improve tomorrow now that I know how to hit my approach shots a bit sharper.”
Bainbridge High School’s Sam Warkentin, a University of Washington commit, led the field with a 69.

Both Ferndale girls’ golfers missed the cutline of 95 and were eliminated from championship contention.
Maeson Mullins (98) and Jillian Anderson (99), playing at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane, had one “blow-up hole” that otherwise would have allowed them to advance to the second day. Mullins’ came on the 12th hole where she recorded an eight.
Anderson also recorded an eight on the Par 13 after an errant tee shot resulted in a lost ball.
“I think it fazed me a bit,” Anderson said. “I think what really is the hard part about it is that I had a good front nine.”
