TEAM PREVIEWS
No. 1 Mount Si (24-2) — Wildcats haven’t lost a game to an in-state opponent this season. Trevor Hennig (23.1 points per game, 5.8 rpg, 5.2 apg, 1.7 spg) and 6-foot-6 guard Lattimore Ford (17.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1 bpg) have both had 40+ point games this season. Hennig, a 6-foot-4 guard and this year’s 4A KingCo MVP, is closing in on Mount Si’s single-season scoring record. Guard Blake Forrest is a high-level defender and the team’s top distributor (6.3 apg).
No. 2 Tahoma (19-6) — Bears will look to bounce back after a loss to Richland in the state regional round. Bears are as offensively balanced as any team in the state: forward Dalton Brown (20.3 ppg) can score from anywhere on the floor, Adam Davis (13.3) is team’s best shooter and guards Carter Stonerock (12 ppg) and Jayden Stephens (10.9 ppg) have shown ability to come up clutch.
No. 3 Gonzaga Prep (20-5) — Bullpups have won 11 straight, including recent wins over Richland and Federal Way, two teams also in the field at the Tacoma Dome. First-team Greater Spokane League selection Henry Sandberg (17.5 ppg) shoots 50 percent from the field and is the player to watch, while sophomore Dylan Groves (12.5 ppg) and junior Nate Christy (13.5) also average double-digit scoring.
No. 4 Glacier Peak (22-3) — 4A Wesco champion Grizzlies will look to bounce back after close losses to Mount Si and Davis in the last two weeks. Guard Josiah Lee (23 ppg, 4 rpg, 4 apg) can light up the scoreboard, evidenced by a school-record 49 points in a game against Bothell in December.
No. 5 Davis (22-2) — Big 9 MVP Cesar Hernandez (22 ppg, 4.1 apg) has been good since stepping on campus as a freshman. The junior guard and three-year starter has enjoyed a breakout season this year and recently joined the 1,000 career points club. Four-year starter Finnegan Anderson averages 15.5 points for the Pirates.
No. 6 Federal Way (16-7) — Eagles are back in the Tacoma Dome despite losing trio Vaughn Weems, Dace Pleasant and Isaiah Afework to graduation from last year’s state semifinal squad. Guard Mason Thomas was the 4A NPSL MVP this season, a strong and crafty scorer. Wing Kofi Peyton is a difference maker for the Eagles when his 3-point shot is falling.
No. 7 Richland (21-4) — Bombers can score at a dizzying pace and should be feeling confident after a comfortable win over second-seeded Tahoma in regional round last weekend. Guard Josh Woodard — also a prolific quarterback for Richland’s state tournament football team in the fall — runs the show, averaging 16.5 points per game. He’s top five all-time on Richland’s career scoring list. Luke Westerfield (13.4 ppg, 7 rpg), Landen Northrop (14.8 ppg) and Jack Forbes (14.5 ppg) all contribute.
No. 8 Kentwood (19-7) — Conquerors are one of the state’s exciting young teams. Junior guard Corey Tita (16.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 1.7 spg) is tough to stop at the rim, while sophomore guard Brandon Tagle (15.2 ppg, 5.5 apg, 2.3 spg) sees the floor as well as anyone. This is Kentwood’s first trip to the Tacoma Dome since it won the 4A state championship in 2017.
No. 9 Olympia (19-7) — Bears lost Parker Gerrits, Andreas Engholm and Mason Juergens from last year’s 4A state tournament runner-up squad, but John Kiley has his Bears back in the Dome again. Guard Matt Lindblom (18 ppg, 5 rpg) has grown into the team’s No. 1 scoring threat. Multi-sport athlete Drew Carlson (8 ppg, 4 rpg, 4 apg) does a bit of everything for the Bears.
No. 10 Jackson (17-9) — Timberwolves have been up and down, but have quality wins over Lynden, Glacier Peak and Arlington on their resume. 6-foot-7 senior forward Ryan McFerran is a double-double machine, averaging 17 points and 17 rebounds per game this season. Senior guard Trey Hawkins (13 ppg, 4 apg) and senior wing Colby Cooke (11 ppg) are both capable scorers. Sophomore guard Seamus Williams (5 apg, 2 spg) is the team’s lockdown defender.
No. 11 Skyview (16-9) — Two-time Greater St. Helen’s League first-team selection Demaree Collins, a 6-foot-2 guard, averages 18.7 points and is shooting 35 percent from 3-point range this season. He recently joined the 1,000 career points club. Sophomore Malakai Weimer (12.6 ppg, 8 rpg), senior Gavin Perdue (9.2 ppg 5.1 rpg) and senior Jaxson Filler (8.3 ppg) are players to watch. Skyview has now appeared in three of the last six state tournaments.
No. 13 Camas (17-10) — The tournament’s lowest seed comes into the Dome with some momentum after a district win over reigning 4A state champion Curtis and a regional round win over West Valley of Yakima last weekend. Junior guard Beckett Currie, the 4A GSHL league MVP, averages 19.6 points, 3.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He’s the school’s career scoring leader. Junior guard Jace VanVoorhis (13.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 5 apg, 2.1 spg) is another player to watch.
