First big mountain snowfall possible in Whatcom County as cooler weather lies ahead. Here’s when
A cooling trend lies ahead and Whatcom County could see its first big mountain snowfall and temperatures into the 30s this week, the National Weather Service in Seattle said.
“Wetter weather is ahead as we move toward mid-week and a cool upper low tracks overhead. Snow levels will be low and the higher Cascade passes (Stevens Pass and Washington Pass) may see a few inches of snow,” meteorologist Maddie Kristell said online.
A National Weather Service briefing issued Sunday called for cooler temperatures this week:
▪ Scattered showers Monday night with snow levels 3,000 to 4,000 feet.
▪ Widespread lowland rain and mountain snow, including the Cascade passes, begins Tuesday. Significant accumulation is not likely for areas below 3,000 feet.
▪ Below normal temperatures with continued rain showers and snow showers for the mountains. Daytime highs likely won’t reach 5o degrees in the lowlands this week.
This week’s forecast prompted the Washington State Department of Transportation to close the final section of Mount Baker Highway, from just below Heather Meadows to Artist Point, for the winter season.
Access to the high high country for those without special snow gear and training.
Overnight low temperatures could drop into the mid-30s near Bellingham, but no freeze warnings were issued, the Weather Service said.
