WSDOT planning work on I-5 that could impact Whatcom County travelers heading south
The Washington State Department of Transportation has scheduled road work that could impact Whatcom County travelers heading south on Interstate 5 this weekend and early next week.
Portions of I-5 south of Bellingham will be reduced to one lane from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. three straight nights so that WSDOT crews can repair guardrails, according to a WSDOT news release.
None of the closures are a related to the landslide that destroyed a guardrail and closed northbound I-5 in early February, WSDOT spokesperson Andrea Petrich told The Bellingham Herald. That guardrail work was completed the week after the slide; Petrich said these repairs are all crash related.
The Whatcom County lane closures include:
▪ The right lane of northbound I-5 near the Old Fairhaven Parkway exit from 9 p.m. Sunday, March 1, through 5 a.m. Monday, March 2.
▪ The right lane of northbound I-5 near the North Lake Samish exit from 9 p.m. Monday, March 2, through 5 a.m. Tuesday, March 3.
▪ The right lane of southbound I-5 near the Alger exit from 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, through 5 a.m. Wednesday, March 4.
Further south near Arlington, WSDOT also will be performing federally-mandated inspections on the I-5 bridges over the Stillaguamish River, according to the release.
WSDOT said to prepare for delays during these lane closures:
▪ The left lane of northbound I-5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, March 2.
▪ The right lane of southbound I-5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 3.
▪ The left lane of southbound I-5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 4.
