With only two weeks remaining until Election Day, voter registration deadlines are quickly approaching. Here’s how to register to vote and cast your ballot.
Who is eligible to vote?
Anyone who is at least 18 years old, is a U.S. citizen and lives in Whatcom County can vote in the upcoming election. You will need a current Washington state driver’s license, permit or ID card to register.
How can you register to vote?
There are three ways to register to vote in Whatcom County: online, by mail or in person.
To register online, visit voteWA.gov and click “register to vote.” You can also print and mail in a voter registration form, which can be found in multiple languages on the Washington Secretary of State website. The form should be sent to the Whatcom County Auditor’s Office at 311 Grand Ave. Suite 103 in Bellingham.
Registration online and by mail must be received by Oct. 27 to be able to vote in the election.
You can also register to vote in-person at the Whatcom County Auditor’s Office until 8 p.m. on Election Day. The office warned that registration lines will likely be long during election week.
How do you vote?
Votes must be cast by mail or in person.
Mail-in ballots were sent out to registered voters on Oct. 15. In order to be counted, completed ballots must be returned in an official ballot drop box or sent by mail and postmarked by Nov. 4. For a list of all 23 ballot drop box locations, visit whatcomcounty.us/1863/Ballot-Drop-Box-Locations. The drop boxes will be open until 8 p.m. on Election Day.
If you are a registered voter who didn’t receive your ballot in the mail, contact the Election Division of the Auditor’s Office at 360-778-5102 or email elelections@co.whatcom.wa.us.
To cast your vote in person, visit suite 103 of the Whatcom County Courthouse between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Election Day. Voters requiring assistance can vote on the accessible voting unit, which has audio and video technology, beginning Oct. 15.
