A police cadet disarmed a 5-year-old who came to the door of a “deplorable’” home holding a loaded gun, Michigan authorities said.

The cadet was serving a subpoena at a residence Jan. 25 when a child answered the door holding a large kitchen knife, according to a news release from the Battle Creek Police Department.

After being asked to have an adult come to the door, the 5-year-old returned with a loaded handgun, which the cadet was able to remove, authorities said.

Patrol officers arrived at the home, and two men and a woman were taken into custody, according to police.

“Due to the handgun and the deplorable condition of the home, five children — ranging from 8 years old to 6 months old — were turned over to Child Protective Services,” police said in the release.

One of the children was taken to a hospital “due to health concerns,” authorities said.

The home was condemned, “and officials are pursuing weapon charges and neglect charges,” police said.

Battle Creek is about a 120-mile drive west from Detroit.
