A Texas man was arrested after officials say he put a gun in a 4-year-old’s bookbag then dropped her off at school.

The 30-year-old man is charged with child endangerment, according to court records.

Officials said the man put a loaded gun in a 4-year-old girl’s bookbag, then dropped her off at Jessup Elementary School in Houston on Jan. 23.

The school said a teacher found the gun and reported it to authorities, according to KHOU. The man told school police he accidentally left the gun in the bookbag and the child, who court records say has special needs, was unaware.

“The safety of our students and staff is always the top priority. As a Gun-Free School Zone, the possession and use of firearms in school zones is prohibited. If you have a firearm in your home, please secure the firearm in a place that children cannot access,” a statement from school principal Ryan Pavone to parents said, according to the news outlet.

McClatchy News is not naming the man to protect the identity of the child.

The man was given a $25,000 bond.
