A hunting guide was fatally shot by another hunter as the group approached a herd of elk in Oregon, deputies said.

The shooting happened shortly before 8 a.m. Nov. 10 near Halfway, the Baker County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

Two 73-year-old men were with 62-year-old Jon Marshall Nichols, their hunting guide, deputies said.

The group was in a side-by-side, a small off-road vehicle, when they saw a herd of elk and got out of the vehicle, deputies said.

One of the 73-year-old men “chambered a round” and accidentally shot Nichols in the back, deputies said.

The men did CPR on Nichols, but he died of his injuries, deputies said.

They used an SOS device to contact authorities.

The investigation is ongoing.

Nichols was from Halfway. The city is in northeastern Oregon, near the Idaho border.
