An 11-year-old boy died in an accidental shooting as he hunted chipmunks with other Amish children, Pennsylvania authorities say.

Pennsylvania State Police said three children were using BB guns to hunt chipmunks Saturday, Nov. 2, in Crawford County.

One of the children fired a round from a .22 caliber rifle toward the chipmunk but missed, state police said. He then fired a second shot as the chipmunk charged toward him.

The children then found the 11-year-old “laying on the ground motionless,” having been shot in the head, state police said.

Authorities said the kids received help from a man who was working in the field. The boy was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh, where doctors said he couldn’t survive his injuries.

The boy, who troopers have not publicly identified, died Nov. 3, state police said. Authorities called the shooting an accident.

Crawford County is about a 95-mile drive north from Pittsburgh.
