A high school student trying to board a school bus was struck by a vehicle before school, authorities in Pennsylvania said.

First responders were called to the scene in Newberry Township shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, according to a police news release.

Officers found the student was hit by a vehicle heading in the opposite direction of the stopped school bus, authorities said. The student had serious injuries and was taken a local hospital for treatment.

The Northeastern School District student was then transferred to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, according to the York Daily Record.

The district did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News on Oct. 27.

The bus stop sign and lights were activated at the time of the crash, according to the York Daily Record. The driver who struck the child is cooperating with police.

An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call Newberry Township Police at 717-938-2608.
