Police warn of thieves using receipts taken from trash for cash refund

Police say thieves have been collecting receipts out of trash cans and returning them with stolen items for a cash refund.

The Bellingham Police Department posted a picture of receipts onto their Facebook page that they say belonged to local thieves.

The thieves collected the receipts from trash cans outside of local businesses and made a list of items to steal from those businesses. The thieves would then steal the items and take them back to the store with the receipt for cash, according to police.

Police advise consumers to tear up or shred receipts that are not kept. Businesses should consider ways to make trash less accessible for thieves.
