Police unsure what caused ‘boom’ in northeast Bellingham

Residents of northeast Bellingham heard a loud explosion Thursday evening, Nov. 13, but law enforcement could not find what caused the noise, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

The loud, dynamite-sized “boom” was reported to law enforcement around 9 p.m., said Undersheriff Jeff Parks.

One resident thought a group of college men had “set something off” near the 3700 block of Greenville Court, Parks said. Others reported a plume of smoke near Hillsdale Road.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that the cause of the explosion was most likely an improvised explosive device or illegal fireworks.

Firefighters and police searched the area for about an hour and spoke to residents but found nothing.

The Sheriff’s Office asked anyone with information about the explosion to call 360-676-6650.
