Car crashes into Whatcom Children's Museum, causing minor damage

An elderly driver backing out of an angled parking stall hit the wrong pedal Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 28, ramming the back of her Mercedes into the Whatcom Children’s Museum, police said.

No one was hurt in the crash at 2 p.m., into an outer wall of the museum at 250 Flora St., and the building didn’t sustain obvious structural damage. A tree was torn down by the car, however, and the silver ’01 Mercedes SL-500 will need repairs.

The driver declined to talk with a reporter. Police said she thought she was hitting the brake, but instead she hit the gas. Officers don’t suspect drugs or alcohol were involved.
