Two-car collision near Bellingham sends both drivers to hospital

A T-bone crash on Mount Baker Highway sent both drivers to St. Joseph hospital for CT scans Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 23.

Roman Taranenko, 18, of the Maple Falls area, had been eastbound on Van Wyk Road before he stopped at the stop sign where the road turns into Mt. Baker Highway. Then he pulled out and collided with an oncoming westbound Chevy S-10 driven by Dean Macy, 44, of Bellingham, according to the state patrol.

A front corner of the Acura slammed into a front corner of the Chevy, said Trooper Mark Francis. Both drivers were able to talk afterward, and their injuries aren’t thought to be life-threatening. Still, they were taken to St. Joseph hospital to be evaluated.

Troopers cited Taranenko for failing to yield. Macy was ticketed for driving without proof of insurance.

Roads were blocked for about an hour while first-responders worked at the scene.
