It's official: The Herald Building is now on the National Register of Historic Places, giving it greater cachet as an important landmark and putting it in line for financial benefits, including tax credits on renovation expenses.
The 88-year-old building at 1155 N. State. St. was added to the Washington Historic Register last year.
Bob Hall and David Johnston bought the building four years ago from The McClatchy Co., owner of The Bellingham Herald, and are well into a nearly $1 million renovation of the first floor.
The Oyster Bar, which is changing its name to Rock and Rye Oyster House, will occupy the southernmost of six remodeled business spaces facing State Street. No other future tenants on the first floor have been announced.
