Whatcom County authorities have arrested a man following the death of a Lynden school bus driver who died in a crash May 1.

Annette Lyon, driver of Lynden School bus No. 24, was killed at the scene of the crash just before 8 a.m. in the 2000 block of Main Street in Lynden, and no children were on the bus during the collision.

“Annette had been a valued member of the district since 2021, and her dedication to our students and families was deeply appreciated,” Lynden School District Superintendent David Vanderyacht said in a statement following the crash. “She will be greatly missed by our entire Lynden Schools community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Annette’s family, friends and colleagues, especially her team at the bus garage.”

In May, authorities said a white SUV was traveling east on Main Street as the bus was traveling west. The driver of the SUV was taken to PeaceHealth Medical Center in Bellingham.
