A driver crashed a vehicle into Kendall Elementary School around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, smashing halfway into a classroom.

The driver missed the corner while traveling south on Kendall Highway, launching into the air for about 50 feet over an embankment and into the school parking lot, Fire District 14 Chief Jerry DeBruin told The Herald. He estimated it’s about 300 feet from the roadway to where the vehicle hit the school.

The driver received minor injuries from the crash and was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center. He has been arrested on suspicion of a DUI, according to Deb Slater with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies first arrived at the scene they discovered the vehicle, a red Ford Focus, halfway into a classroom, Slater said.

The Mount Baker School District closed Kendall Elementary on Monday as a result of the incident.
