Whatcom County authorities dispatched a bomb squad after discovering what appeared to be an improvised explosive device while serving a search warrant Oct. 15.

Investigators determined the device to be a sparkler bomb, according to Megan Peters with The Bellingham Police Department. A sparkler bomb is a common homemade firework created by taping hundreds of sparkler-style fireworks together.

The search, conducted in the 1400 block of Lakeway Drive, also revealed a handgun that had been reported stolen, equipment and paraphernalia commonly used to distribute drugs, and $3,000 in cash.

Joshua Byram, 46, of Blaine was arrested on suspicion of three counts of delivery of a controlled substance (fentanyl) and possession with intent to deliver (fentanyl and meth).
