Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Oct. 14 following a report of a domestic dispute near Deming that required a SWAT team response.

Preston Scott Torres, 31, was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault of a child, a class C felony; two counts of second-degree assault-domestic violence, a class B felony; two counts of fourth-degree assault domestic violence, a gross misdemeanor; and third-degree abandonment of a dependent person, also a gross misdemeanor.

Torres and another adult were arguing when he allegedly started to shake an infant at the residence, according to Deb Slater with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.

The second adult told investigators Torres also slammed them against the wall, punched them and attempted to strangle them.

The individual was able to get out of the house and call 911. When police arrived, a search warrant was obtained and the SWAT team entered the home.

The baby was found unharmed and was checked over by medics after being removed from the home.

Torres had left the home and was later found by deputies nearby. He was taken into custody without incident, and he remains in custody at Whatcom County Jail on a $20,000 appearance bond.
