Recognize this person who broke into the Whatcom Humane Society at night and stole a dog?

Someone broke into and stole a dog from the Whatcom Humane Society.

Authorities say the thief cut through an exterior fence, destroyed a locked steel kennel door, removed the dog and left the property by cutting through another outdoor fence. The theft occurred around 11:41 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1.

Earlier the same day, customer service staff received a call from an unknown person asking about the specific dog that was later stolen. The caller claimed to know the previous owner but would not provide any details, Whatcom Humane Society Director Laura Clark told The Bellingham Herald.

The dog, a one-year-old female named “Pogo” by WHS staff, had been in the care of WHS for a couple of weeks. She arrived as a stray, with no identification, on Carl Road in Everson on Nov. 11. Nobody reported her lost or visited the shelter to fill out a lost dog report. Pogo was dropped off by a good Samaritan, and Clark doesn’t believe this person has anything to do with the incident.

Pogo arrived at the shelter underweight and with a “cherry eye,” a condition that can be fixed with minor surgery. The procedure would have been done at the same time she was spayed, prior to a potential adoption.

The humane society is asking anyone with information regarding the dog or person’s whereabouts to contact director@whatcomhumane.org or call 460-733-2080, ext. 3026.
