Small fire at Bellingham’s Options High School last week is believed to have been intentionally set
The cause of small fire last week at Options High School in Bellingham is being investigated as arson. There were no injuries.
The fire started around 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 18, and was contained to a men’s restroom on the second floor of the school. Students and staff smelled the smoke, and the building was evacuated. The fire department was called and cleared the fire before classes were allowed to resume.
The bathroom is cordoned off and damage is estimated at around $10,000.
Due to the location of the fire, and other undisclosed evidence, the fire was determined to have been set intentionally, and is still being investigated.
“Had it not been for the decisive action by school staff and students, the fire could easily have spread, putting many staff and students in danger,” Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Muprhy told The Bellingham Herald in an email.
