Washington state is home to one of the best places in the United States to visit in August, according to Yahoo Travel.
“August may mark the crescendo of summer vacation season, but there’s still plenty of time for a long weekend at the beach or in the mountains — especially if you’re looking to escape the summer heat,” Yahoo Travel writer Dana Yewbank wrote in a June 29 article.
Yahoo Travel singled out five “cool beach towns and high-elevation destinations” worth a trip.

What’s the best Washington city to visit in August?
When it comes to August travel, major Washington cities such as Seattle and Spokane can’t compare with Bellingham, according to Yahoo Travel.
Bellingham’s nickname — the City of Subdued Excitement” — is “fitting for a town that’s extremely laidback but always has plenty to do,” Yewbank said, highlighting the city’s packed entertainment calendar and “endless array of outdoor activities.”
In addition to beaches, forests, mountains and lakes, the Bellingham area serves as a “lively art and culture hub,” according to Yahoo Travel.
What are fun things to do in Bellingham?
Activities in Bellingham in August include the Bellingham Farmer’s Market, live music, outdoor movie screenings and a sandcastle competition on the beach, according to the Visit Bellingham Whatcom County website.
You can also book a kayak tour to view bioluminescent ocean waves.
Other options include biking, paddleboarding, paragliding or hitting the trail.
Popular hiking trails in and around Whatcom County include Oyster Dome, Cascade Trail, Stimpson Nature Reserve and Fragrance and Lost Lakes, the Washington Trails Association said.
“You can spend the day hiking to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the sea, then relax afterward on a sunny patio, local beer in hand,” Yewbank said.
Yahoo Travel also highlighted The Upfront Theatre, the Bellingham Circus Guild and the Noisy Waters Mural Festival.
“Drive along Chuckanut Drive south of town for a jaw-dropping view of Bellingham Bay from atop surreal sandstone cliffs, and stop off at Larrabee State Park for a hike or a wander down to the beach,” Yewbank said
