Whatcom Roundup: New Bellis Fair shop; downtown restaurant expands

Downtown restaurant expands to Barkley
Sweet As Waffles has filed a building permit application with the city of Bellingham for a restaurant location at 2930 Newmarket St., Suite 113 in Barkley Village. It will be the restaurant’s second location, Graham Berkwitt, co-owner of Sweet As Waffles, told The Bellingham Herald.
The downtown location will remain open and operating. The application was filed June 1 and had not been approved as of a June 5 records search. No official opening date has been announced.
New store in Bellis Fair mall
The Bellis Fair mall is likely adding a new store to its lineup, according to a building permit application filed for a BoxLunch in suite 332, near American Eagle Outfitters and ProImage Sports. BoxLunch is a pop culture and fandom gift shop that carries a variety of products and apparel based on movies, books, shows and more. The application was filed June 4 and had not been approved as of a June 5 records search.
Bellis Fair mall is at 1 Bellis Fair Parkway in Bellingham.
Restaurant celebrates 39th year
Five Columns Restaurant has reached it 39th anniversary and is offering special discounts throughout June to celebrate.
“WOW! We can’t believe we’ve been in business for 39 years! There is no question about it, we wouldn’t be here without the continued support of our wonderful community. We are so grateful to have the opportunity to serve you but also to know you and have your friendship. Thank you from our family and our staff!! We look forward to celebrating with you,” owner Soula Christopoulos told The Bellingham Herald.
For the month of June the restaurant is offering 20% off chicken, pork, lamb or prawn souvlakis, baby back ribs and their gyro plate dinner to celebrate the anniversary.
Five Columns Restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at 1301 E. Maple St. in Bellingham.
Ferndale’s Summer of Fun
The city of Ferndale’s Summer of Fun officially starts Saturday, June 12. The events include outdoor movies, community game night, the Bellingham Circus Guild, community crafting days, the fitth annual FerndALE Block Party, and more.
Events are organizers include the city of Ferndale, Ferndale Downtown Association and the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Trails Advisory Board.
