Here’s our weekly roundup of the latest retail and restaurant activity around Whatcom County:

New Old Navy location opens

The new Old Navy location in Bellingham is officially open, according to the store’s website. The new location at 4253 Meridian St. is located at the Cordata Center, next door to Trader Joe’s.

It’s the second Old Navy in Bellingham, along with another inside Bellis Fair mall. It is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.

Nothing Bundt Cakes progress

Building permits have been approved for the new bakery called Nothing Bundt Cakes that is planned for 4265 Meridian St. Suite 104, in the Cordata Center. A building permit was approved May 4. No official opening date or construction plans have been announced.

New Port executive director

The Port of Bellingham has a new executive director, Tiffany DeSimone, according to a May 12 press release from The Port.

“Tiffany brings the integrity, experience, judgment, and community connection necessary to carry out the Commission’s vision. She understands that economic development, environmental stewardship, and public access are not competing priorities — they are commitments we must advance together,” commission President Michael Shepard said in the news release.

“As Executive Director, my role is to carry out the Commission’s vision with integrity, transparency, and a focus on results. I am proud to serve the community where I was raised and to help shape a waterfront that reflects our maritime heritage, optimizes our many transportation gateways including our marine terminals and the airport, supports our business community, honors public access, and creates lasting opportunity,” DeSimone stated in the release.

DeSimone steps into the new role immediately.

Unemployment rate shows decline

The latest data update from the Washington State Employment Security Department shows Whatcom County’s unemployment rate decreased slightly from February to March. In March, the county had a 4.8% unemployment rate with 5,466 unemployed people. In February, the unemployment rate was 5.15% in Whatcom County, with 5,879 people unemployed.
