Going dry for January? This Bellingham bottle shop sells non-alcoholic booze
After welcoming in the new year, you may be looking to make a change in your personal life.
You might want to cut down on your alcohol use — or stop drinking alcohol altogether — beginning with Dry January.
Fortunately, a Bellingham bottle shop has just the thing.
Nestled among clothing stores and coffee shops in Bellingham’s historic Fairhaven neighborhood, Bloomhaven is a boutique wine and liquor store without the alcohol.
Bloomhaven co-owner Molly Flynn lovingly calls the store her “baby.”
What is Bloomhaven in Bellingham like?
Wine bottles, bartending equipment and plants are on meticulous display in the front window of Bloomhaven, 1201 11th St., Suite 101, in Bellingham.
Passers-by might be convinced the business is a classic bottle shop, which is partially true.
All the wine and liquor bottles displayed neatly in Flynn’s store is completely alcohol-free.
According to Flynn, most of the beverages sold at Bloomhaven are de-alcoholized, a process that’s done with reverse osmosis.
Inside the store, warm lighting creates a comforting and inviting environment. Green walls match the various plants scattered throughout the store.
Wooden shelves line the walls, all neatly filled with various nonalcoholic liquors. There’s also a refrigerator behind the checkout stand filled with alcohol-free cocktails available for purchase.
Flynn keeps a few open bottles of non-alcoholic spirits in the fridge so customers can sample the store’s offerings before taking them home.
Outside the shop, there’s plenty of paid street parking on 11th Street and neighboring roads.
How did Fairhaven bottle shop get started?
Before opening Bloomhaven, Flynn worked in the coffee industry as an espresso machine technician.
Flynn first became aware of the nonalcoholic beverages on the market when she went sober in March 2016. She said it felt like she was in a cycle of using alcohol to cope with her anxiety and depression, and needed some mental clarity.
She then started sampling different non-alcoholic beverages and sharing her reviews via Instagram.
Flynn got her opportunity to open an alcohol-free bottle shop in the summer of 2024. Her friend’s lease for a Bellingham storefront was about to end, and they were looking for someone to take it over.
Flynn moved from Seattle to Bellingham to open Bloomhaven in September 2024.
To statrt Bloomhaven, Flynn teamed up with business partner Brandon Paul Weaver, who she met in 2010 while working in the coffee industry. Paul Weaver said he saw Flynn’s passion for the bottle shop and knew it was something they had to make happen.
Now, Paul Weaver handles the backend logistics for Bloomhaven from Seattle while Flynn runs the local storefront.
What’s for sale at 11th Street wine, liquor store?
Lining the shelves at Bloomhaven are various nonalcoholic varieties of wine, tequila, rum and gin. Notable brands for sale include Woody wines, Pallini limencello and Free Spirits liquor and canned cocktails.
According to Flynn, Bloomhaven sells more than 100 unique products.
On a recent Tuesday morning, a woman stopped by Bloomhaven in search of a bottle of nonalcoholic sparkling rosé.
Although Bloomhaven is closed on Tuesdays during the winter, Flynn volunteered to quickly help the customer — and found the exact bottle she was seeking.
“Are you doing anything to take care of yourself today?” Flynn asked as she rang the customer up.
“It’s actually my birthday,” the woman responded. “ I’m going to drink this and eat pizza.”
A wide smile spread across Flynn’s face as she wrapped the bottle in tissue paper and popping it in a paper bag.
“Thank you for letting me be a part of your birthday celebration,” she said before walking the customer to the door and says goodbye.
It’s the moments such as those that remind Flynn of her purpose at the store.
“To me, it means everything,” Flynn said. “This wouldn’t have been possible without me going sober. To be here as a small business owner, to have created this life for myself, that is meaningful and joyful. I feel really privileged.”
