Investigation underway after fire destroys Whatcom County trailer

The cause of a fire that completely destroyed a camper and a 5th-wheel trailer residence in Whatcom County last week is being investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Firefighters responded at about 5:50 p.m. on Oct. 9 to what was originally reported as a vehicle fire in the 5000 block of Elder Road, but was later determined to be a camper trailer and fifth wheel trailer fire, being used as a single residence.

The residence was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on scene, according to Whatcom County Fire District 7 Assistant Chief Justin Iverson.

The resident of the trailer was not home at the time of the fire and is uninjured, Iverson told The Bellingham Herald.

Firefighters were able to knock down the bulk of the fire in under 10 minutes. Firefighters then spent the next few hours digging through the remnants of the residence to find and put out hot spots, Iverson said.

Firefighters were cleared from the scene about three hours after arriving, according to Iverson.

A total of 14 units responded to the fire from Fire District 7 in Ferndale, North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, and Fire District 17.

While blocking off the road for firefighters, a Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was struck, injuring the deputy inside, according to Deb Slater with the Sheriff’s Office. The deputy has since been cleared from the hospital and was at home and resting as of Oct. 10, Slater said.
