A Whatcom County sheriff’s deputy was hurt Thursday night west of Ferndale when a driver slammed into his patrol car, the Washington State Patrol said.

A State Patrol report on the incident said that deputy Thomas Craig was blocking the intersection of Mountain View and Barr roads, in a marked SUV with his emergency lights flashing, when he was hit by a Ferndale woman driving a 2005 Cadillac.

Both Craig and Gini Alexander were taken by ambulance for treatment at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, the State Patrol report said. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The impact of the crash left Craig’s 2015 Ford Explorer in a ditch and Alexander’s car on the westbound shoulder.

The speed limit on Mountain View Road is 50 mph, and it is 35 mph on Barr Road. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to the State Patrol report.

The WSP report listed no cause for the crash, and it wasn’t immediately known whether Alexander was ticketed.

Deb Slater with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office told The Herald on Friday morning that Deputy Craig was home and resting.
