Whatcom County nonprofit leader to step down after 24 years of service

After more than two decades with Sustainable Connections, the Whatcom County nonprofit’s executive director and co-founder, Derek Long, announced he will step away from his position at the end of the month.

“While this was not an easy decision, it comes from a need to find a better work-life balance, focus more on my family, and create space for new leadership to guide Sustainable Connections into its next chapter,” Long said in a public message.

The organization’s board of directors is expected to determine a transition plan and announce a timeline for an executive director search in the coming weeks, according to an announcement from Sustainable Connections.

“As I prepare to transition out of this role, I feel so proud of what we’ve built together,” Long said. “From our early days as a scrappy and passionate group of changemakers with big ideas, to our years of growth into a team of dedicated community builders, it’s been an inspiring journey.”

Changes to existing programming and operations are not expected as a result of Long’s resignation. The Whatcom County organization remains committed to its mission and vision, according to the announcement.

“Our community is simply a better place to live thanks to the vision and work that Derek accomplished,” Board President Bruce Tabb said in the announcement. “His legacy is profound and lasting. All of us appreciate his commitment to ensuring that our present and future are strong and resilient. We look forward to celebrating his legacy as Sustainable Connections enters its next chapter.”

Long said despite the organization navigating “challenges and transitions” over the last few years, the nonprofit is “stronger than ever.”
