Whatcom Roundup: Homestead shop opens; brewery expands as another shuts down
Here’s our weekly roundup of the latest retail and restaurant activity around Whatcom County:
Homestead bakery shop opens
The Miller Homestead Bloom and Bake, a home store with baked goods, eggs and herbal remedies, opened Sept. 19. The home store will be open each weekend offering a variety of goods such as rosemary garlic parmesan focaccia bread, chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin coffee cake and cardamom oatmeal cookies with maple espresso glaze. The shops menu will vary each week.
The shop will be open Fridays through Sunday until 7 p.m. at 564 E Smith Road in Bellingham.
District Brewing expands Ferndale location
District Brewing, a family-owned brewery with locations in Mount Vernon, Ferndale and Lynden, is adding on to its Ferndale location to offer a wider menu.
Although the Mount Vernon and Lynden locations both offer beer, ciders and a variety of house pizzas, wings and salads, Ferndale previously did not have its own kitchen, but instead welcomed guests to enjoy West Side Pizza next door.
Now the brewery is undergoing a kitchen renovation to expand its menu and offer pizza, wings, salads and more to Ferndale, according to a social media post.
The restaurant has been temporarily closed since Sept. 12 for construction, and no reopening date has been announced.
District Brewing’s Ferndale location is at 2000 Main St.
Boundary Bay Brewing closing permanetly
Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro, one of Bellingham’s most popular breweries and restaurants, will have its last day of business Tuesday, Sept. 30.
After its final goodbye party on Sept. 30, the brewery will be sharing some of its recipes with Black Raven Brewery in Woodinville, which will continue brewing those Bellingham favorites.
Boundary Bay Brewery is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 1107 Railroad Ave. in downtown Bellingham.
Whatcom unemployment rate increases
Whatcom County’s unemployment rate decreased compared to last month, according to data from the Washington State Employment Security Department.
Whatcom County had a 4.6% unemployment rate with 5,081 unemployed people in August, an increase of 0.1% and 132 people compared to July.
