The city of Ferndale has appointed Matt Huffman as the new Chief of Police at the Ferndale Police Department.

Huffman retired as a lieutenant from the department in 2023 but agreed to return in December to serve as interim chief after former Chief Kevin Turner accepted a new position as police chief with the city of Burlington.

“I’ve been consistently impressed by Chief Huffman’s calm and collaborative leadership style,” Mayor Greg Hansen said in a city of Ferndale news release. “His steady hand and deep understanding of our community will ensure that the Ferndale Police Department continues to be one of the top law enforcement agencies in our region.”

Last month the city named Sean O’Laughlin, deputy chief of Police for the Eastern Washington University Police Department, as Ferndale’s next chief. Since then city staff have determined the position is “not the right fit for O’Laughlin,” according to the news release.

Huffman spent his entire 26-year career with the Ferndale Police Department and is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.
