Could downtown Bellingham have a new go-to Mexican restaurant?

Bordertown Mexican Grill opened its first Bellingham branch last month in the former location of Pepper Sisters at 1055 N. State Street. The restaurant has a popular outposts in Blaine, which has a 4.4-star rating on 73 reviews, as well as a food truck in Lynden.

While the Bellingham location has only been open for a month, the early reviews seem to be positive. We decided to check out the new restaurant to see what you can get there on a $25 budget. Here’s what we learned.

What’s on the Bordertown menu?

The restaurant serves a wide range of food, including a pretty substantial breakfast menu that features chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos and breakfast tacos.

The lunch and dinner menus are just as big, with a good combination of Mexican-American classics, as well as some more authentic dishes and some creative takes on the classics as well. They have several burrito and taco options, along with enchiladas, mole, birria and chile verde.

Breakfast dishes are a little over $10 while lunch and dinner options are slightly more expensive, with some nearing $20.

When I visited the State Street spot, located a bit on the quieter side of downtown, it was relatively empty, although it was just before noon on a Friday. It’s a big space, with a handful of six-person tables at the front, and smaller along the sides and in the back of the restaurant. It seemed like a great place to go with a big group of people.

What can you get for $20?

The first thing that stood out to me on the menu was the breakfast burrito, probably because I had a recent Reddit thread somewhere in the back of my mind that called it the best in town.

While there are a few places you can find a good breakfast burrito in downtown, most of them aren’t actually open for breakfast. So with Bordertown opening at 8:00 a.m. every day but Sunday (when it opens at 10:00 a.m.), it could quickly become a go-to weekend breakfast for people who live in the area.

The breakfast burrito was $10.95 and I added a horchata for $4.25, bringing my total to $15.20, $16.57 after tax.

It was definitely good value for the price. The breakfast burrito came with eggs, potatoes, cheese, onions, peppers and avocado (although you can get meat instead). It was filling without being heavy, very potato-heavy and came with what tasted to me like American cheese, which definitely isn’t my first choice in a breakfast burrito but it grew on me.

The salsas that were served on the side – a smokey red salsa and a spicier green one – added a lot of flavor.

The horchata was even better, and would’ve made for a refreshing drink to walk around downtown with on a sunny day had I not decided to eat at the restaurant.

It wasn’t the best breakfast burrito I’ve ever had but definitely a solid option, especially with its price and central location.

They’re open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sundays.

If you were given $25 where would you go? Drop your suggestions in the form below and we’ll put it on our list of affordable Bellingham activities to try.
