Anacortes seafood company issues recall of chowder products after bacteria contamination
SeaBear Smokehouse in Anacortes has issued a recall of some of its salmon and clam chowder products.
The company’s Smoked Salmon and Alehouse Clam Chowders have been potentially contaminated with a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, which can cause illness or death. Symptoms include weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble speaking or swallowing, according to a company announcement.
The chowders have been distributed to stores in Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado and Alaska, according to a company announcement initially released March 15.
The recall is a voluntary one made by SeaBear, with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration.
No illnesses had been reported as of March 15.
SeaBear reported there was a pouch-sealing issue. An investigation revealed it was a mechanical issue with multiple pouches, causing some to leak, according to the release.
Full refunds for the products can be provided if customers contact the SeaBear service team at 1-800-645-3474 or smokehouse@seabear.com, according to the announcement.
