Police reports: Scam callers pretending to be official Whatcom County law enforcement
The Bellingham Police Department is warning residents of scam callers who are pretending to be police in Whatcom County and demanding money from people.
The scammers will claim to be official law enforcement and accuse people of missing jury duty or having outstanding warrants, according to Bellingham Police Department public information officer Megan Peters.
The scammers then tell people the only way to clear their mistakes is to buy gift cards and provide the card information to the scammer over the phone, Peters told The Bellingham Herald.
The scammers also sometimes pretend that a family member of the victim is imprisoned and ask the victim to send bail money, Peters said. Victims of these calls told police the scammers have heavy Southern accents, according to Peters.
The Bellingham Police Department has received multiple reports of these scam calls since Wednesday, February 28.
People who believe they have been contacted by scammers should report this to the police through the BPD website.
