A bike pump track is on its way to this Bellingham park

Nathanial Kyle holds up his son, Nathanial, then-3, to reach some climbing bars during a 2007 visit to Birchwood Park in Bellingham. The park, located north of Squalicum Parkway, features a playground, basketball court, picnic shelter and a play field. The site once was home to a shingle mill. It is expected to have a fully usable bike pump track by late spring or early summer 2023.

Birchwood Park in Bellingham is expected to have a fully usable bike pump track by late spring or early summer.

The proposed pump track and skills zone is currently in the permitting and design stage and is anticipated to open by May or June, according to a post by the Bellingham Parks and Recreation Twitter account.

The bike pump track is being built in the southwest section of the park in partnership with the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition. The nonprofit organization is funding the project with community donations.

The Parks and Recreation Department is also funding the construction of a new restroom facility in place of the existing port-a-potty at Birchwood Park. That project is expected to cost $200,000 from park impact fees and will be completed this month.

The Birchwood Park parking lot is expected to be closed to public vehicles on Thursday, Feb. 9, while the new concrete restroom structure is set. The parking lot is expected to reopen by 4:30 p.m. that same day, according to Bellingham Parks and Recreation.

Both of these park improvements are part of the Birchwood Park Master Plan, which was amended in 2019 to include these additions.

Birchwood Park is located between Firwood Avenue and Cedarwood Avenue in Bellingham. It backs up to Squalicum Creek Park.
