Spring has sprung, in January! Plants begin blooming at this Bellingham favorite nursery
One of Bellingham’s beloved plant nurseries may be opening sooner than expected as herbs, veggies and berry starts, as well as flowers, have already begun to bloom.
Joe’s Gardens posted a hopeful announcement on its Facebook page on Monday, Jan. 16, teasing the 2023 plant season that is already on its way.
“Weather permitting we will open mid-February which we have done for a handful of seasons in the past. At this time we plan to open in March, but if the weather warms or dries out, we may move that up,” Nathan Weston, owner of Joe’s Gardens, wrote in an email to The Bellingham Herald.
All of the nursery’s blooms are in normal growth patterns as the nursery controls the growths with greenhouse temperatures, according to Weston.
In the post’s comments, Joe’s Gardens said it would announce its opening date on social media once it was set. Last year, the shop opened on Feb. 28 for the season.
The nursery sells many species of herb and vegetable starts, blueberry and raspberry plants, bedding plants, potting soil, hanging baskets and produce.
The nursery is in the Happy Valley neighborhood at 3110 Taylor Ave. and updates its hours on Facebook posts regularly throughout the season.
