Want a Nexus pass to cross the U.S.-Canada border? Here’s how to do it

This year, it should be easier to get a Nexus pass that lets travelers cross the U.S.-Canada border faster and makes flying easier, according to a report in The Canadian Press.

Getting approved for a pass requires an interview with U.S. and Canadian authorities and Canadian enrollment centers have been closed for almost a year because of a dispute over legal protections for American customs officers who carry a sidearm, according to The Canadian Press.

With the Canadian offices closed, there’s been long wait times because of a backlog of applications.

The Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection in recent months began to increase the number of interview appointments available, both through longer hours and adding more locations on the U.S. side of the border, according to an article published online Wednesday, Jan. 11.

To apply for the NEXUS program:

Go to the Trusted Travelers Programs website and submit an application.

Satisfy the eligibility criteria.

Be admissible in Canada and the United States.

Pass risk assessments by both countries.

The application-processing fee of $50 per adult applicant is non-refundable and may include a Transportation Security Administration pre-check authorization for use at airports. Nexus membership is valid for five years.

Once conditional approval is granted, applicants must schedule an interview at a Nexus enrollment center and then have their iris captured.
