This Bellingham grocery store is about to reveal its remodel

The Fred Meyer grocery store on West Bakerview Road in Bellingham is celebrating its re-grand opening after undergoing a partial remodel.

The remodel included the addition of larger grocery aisles with more visible products that are easier to move around, according to Fred Meyer Stores Director of Corporate Affairs Jeffery Temple.

The remodel created “much-needed extra room” for holiday sales, Temple told The Herald.

The store’s remodel took about six months, starting in June 2022. It will officially be complete Friday, Nov. 18, according to Temple.

The grocery store, which originally opened at its Bakerview location in 2003, stayed open during the remodel, Temple wrote.

The photo electronics department “received a whole new look,” with new fixtures and a glass front, Temple said.

“It is very appealing to the eye,” Temple wrote. “You can see through the whole department, and it really makes you want to go in and explore.”

The apparel department also received several new fixtures in the remodel.

This remodel comes amid an almost $12.5 billion grocery merger between Fred Meyer-owner Kroger and Albertsons, which was announced in October.

Grocery store union representatives and legislators, including Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., have publicly expressed concern about the merger, saying it could mean higher prices and the loss of jobs and stores across Washington state.

The re-grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony for the North Bellingham Fred Meyer store is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 18 at 1225 W. Bakerview Road.
