Have you seen this ship in Bellingham’s harbor? Here’s what it’s doing

The Blue Everton arrived Sunday, Oct. 16, in Bellingham Bay after being in Stockton, Calif. It will remain at the Bellingham Shipping Terminal for at least a week.

The 581-foot-long, 92-foot-wide vessel will be loaded with about 23,000 metric tons of scrap metal accumulated by port tenet ABC Recycling, according to the Port of Bellingham’s Public Affairs Administrator Michael Hogan.

That amount of metal weighs about as much as 3,800 male African elephants.

About 40 people are involved in loading the vessel, including employees of ABC Recycling, Pacific Terminal Services Company, International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 7, Transmarine Navigation and port staff, according to Hogan.

The metal will be transported on the Blue Everton to south Asia to be recycled, Hogan told The Bellingham Herald.

ABC Recycling has operated as a Canadian-based metals recycling company since 1912. ABC expanded to the U.S. market in 2020 and now operates out of the Port of Bellingham.

ABC anticipates exporting scrap metal from the Bellingham Shipping Terminal every 6-8 weeks, Hogan told The Herald.

Worldwide demand for recycled metals is increasing, according to a report by Precedence Research.

This may be because they are less expensive than mining new ores, require less energy to produce and create fewer greenhouse gas emissions, Hogan told The Herald.

The Blue Everton is a bulk carrier ship that was built in 2002. It is currently valued at $9.4 million, according to MarineTraffic.com.
